“I don’t grow up. In me is the small child of my early days”- MC Escher
Dutch artist MC Escher (1898-1972) has overwhelmed the world with his graphic works, which include lithographs, woodcuts and wood engravings and over 2000 drawings and sketches.
Influenced by Jessurun de Mesquita (Jewish graphic arts professor with Portuguese origin), he abandoned architecture to do graphic arts, after falling in love with engravings.
He lived in several countries, and travelled around which gave him the inspiration he needed like the Moorish decorative styles from Alhambra in Spain.
The King of Illusion had intriguing impossible drawings which got the admiration from the world, but not until the 50’s, after a couple Time/Life magazine articles.
He enjoyed working with mathematical and crystallographic concepts and with the idea of infinity.
“Though I possess no knowledge or training on exact sciences, I often feel that I have more in common with mathematicians than with my fellow artists.” – MC Escher
Once again, pictures speak louder than words.
